Ants evolved from wasp-like ancestors about 140 million years ago. They are easily identified by their elbowed antennae, the distinctive node-like structure and slender waists. Ants may form 15–25% of the terrestrial animal biomass and there is an an estimated 22,000 species. Their success has been attributed to their social organisation and their ability to modify habitats, tap resources, and defend themselves.
